NIGERIA: KANO GOV'T TO CONSTRUCT 44 GARMENT PRODUCTION UNITS

The government of Kano state in northern Nigeria is planning to build 44 new garment production units across the province with an investment of N4.7 billion, WorldStage Newsonline reported.

 

Speaking at a graduation ceremony of 60 sewing trainees, Kano Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso announced that each of the 44 new garment manufacturing units would be constructed at a cost of N50 million, while another N2.5 billion would be spent on purchasing machinery for these centres.

 

Mr. Kwankwaso, who visited India earlier this month, said he saw how garment industries are flourishing in the South Asian country and he was convinced that garment manufacturing centres are desirable local enterprises for creating employment opportunities and for income generation.

 

He informed that the Kano government has constituted a committee tasked with recruiting qualified personnel to run the garment units prior to their formal opening.

 

The construction of clothing units is part of this government’s efforts to create wealth and alleviate poverty, Mr. Kwankwaso said.

 

Each of the 60 trainees who successfully completed training in garment stitching, were given a sewing machine, electric generator and N10,000 as working capital, Olusegun Awolowo, executive director of Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), said at the event.

 

Alhaji Saidu Dattijo Adhama, chairman of Adhama Garments and Textiles Company, the firm that sponsored the training, said if domestic garment producers need financial and moral support to enable them to compete favorably with foreign companies.
