Africa Fashion International’s Fashion Week Africa
kicked off today in Johannesburg, South Africa. Over five whirlwind
days, more than 35 designers—representing South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire,
Morocco, Mozambique, Cameroon, Rwanda, Angola, Nigeria, Ghana, and
more—will present their latest collections.
Fashion VIPs like The Satorialist’s Scott Schuman and editors from Elle France, The Wall Street Journal, and Grazia Italia are all expected to make an appearance.
“African fashion has an incredible potential future,” Vogue Italia editor in chief Franca Sozzani told Lifestyle Mirror. “Young talents are full of creativity. They need to be supported.”
To figure out which designers to watch, we asked Hanneli Rupert, owner of Okapi handbags and the store Merchants on Long in Cape Town, South Africa, for the collections she’s most excited to see. All will be on offer at her shop.
Her emerging designer hot list:
Maki OhThe Nigerian brand explores the idea of national dress by using elements from traditional garments worn by various Nigerian tribes. The pieces fuse traditional techniques and materials like raffia with elegant and modern construction. (See a runway look above.) The latest collection draws its themes of authority and control from the opening scene of Jacques Tati’s movie Playtime.
LalessoCodesigners Olivia Kennaway and Alice Heusser (Rupert’s best friend since age 11) combine their Kenyan and South African design sensibilities to create the first zero carbon fashion brands in the world. Inspired by the East African khanga, their collection is as vibrant and carefree as the summer season. Wear it everywhere. (Worldwide shipping is free!)
Laurence AirlineThe brand is based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire–the hometown of jetsetting chief designer, Laurence Chauvin Buthaud. He was born in Africa, raised in Switzerland, and is now based in Paris. Each collection is produced at the Laurence Airline Workshop, which teaches couture sewing and creates jobs following the aftermath of Côte d’Ivoire’s humanitarian crisis. The clothes use local fabrics in bold prints or a soft color palette, cut in decidedly masculine silhouettes.
