FASHION EXPERT TASKS GOVERNMENT ON COTTON PRODUCTION

FOUNDER of the Lagos Fashion and Design Week, Mrs Omoyemi Akerele, has said that for Nigeria to be the hub of fashion and an avenue for creating wealth and employment, government should support Nigerian farmers to grow cotton.

Speaking in Lagos yesterday at a press briefing to announce the commencement of the second edition of the fashion week, which starts today at the Expo Centre of Eko Hotel and will run till October 27, Akerele said that for there to be local fabric Nigerian designers would work with, having cotton produced in Nigeria would play a critical role. She also urged revival of the textile industry.
According to Akerele, the goal of the Lagos Fashion and Design Week is to make Nigeria an internationally recognised nation for fashion and design.
“As a result, the BuyNigeria Campaign was launched in 2010 as an initiative that encourages Nigerians and foreigners to support emerging and existing designers in Nigeria. We also want people to realise the potential of fashion as a serious business and an avenue to also create employment.”
Omoyele disclosed that this year’s edition would host over 33 designers showcasing their spring/summer collections.
